Success Is an Illusion, Growth Is the Reality We Should Pursue
From the time we are children, society conditions us to believe in the concept of "success." We are told that success comes with high grades, accolades, and achieving specific results. But what if this idea of success is nothing more than a mirage?
The Childhood Chase for Success
As children, many of us are constantly pushed to achieve high marks, to top exams, and to outperform others. We are taught that these results define our future. The more we achieve, the more successful we will be—or so we're told. This conditioning shapes our entire approach to life, and soon we find ourselves constantly chasing a goal, thinking it's the key to happiness.
The Origin of "Success" and "Growth"
Historically, the word "success" comes from the Latin word successus, meaning "an outcome" or "a result." It first appeared in English around the 16th century and has since evolved to represent external achievements and societal measures of accomplishment. Over time, it became associated with fame, wealth, and high status.
On the other hand, the concept of "growth" has a more organic foundation. The word originates from the Old English growan, meaning "to flourish" or "to thrive." It focuses on the process of development, both physically and mentally. Unlike "success," which often focuses on the final outcome, "growth" is about the journey and continuous progress.
Both words reflect different philosophies of life—while "success" emphasizes results, "growth" highlights the importance of learning and evolving throughout life.
The Reality Check
Fast forward to adulthood, and many of us find ourselves grappling with the harsh reality that this “success” is elusive. We work hard, yet sometimes, the results don’t match our expectations. Worse still, we often see people we once thought were "less successful" in school now thriving. The contrast between what we were told and what we experience shatters our expectations.
Redefining Growth as Success
The problem with success, as traditionally defined, is that it’s linked to an external result—something that is often outside our control. Instead, growth is internal and personal. It’s about hitting milestones, learning from experiences, and constantly evolving. Unlike success, growth is a never-ending process, and it gives meaning to every phase of life, regardless of the outcomes.
Milestones Over Results
When we focus on growth, every milestone becomes a victory. It’s not about the final destination, but the journey. It’s about how much you’ve learned, how many challenges you’ve overcome, and how you’ve grown as a person. Desires will always be unlimited, but growth happens in the small actions we take toward achieving them.
Focus on Actions, Not Results
At the end of the day, success is subjective. It means different things to different people. But growth is universal. The more we focus on our personal growth, the more fulfilling our lives become. Instead of measuring your life by external standards of success, measure it by how much you've grown, how many milestones you've reached, and the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
